Nostalgia is most often thought of as sentimentality for the past – a wistful desire to return to a former time in one’s life. Here at Room with Roses we’re more than happy to help your tastebuds and mind return to the past with a blissfully nostalgic menu, filled with classic favourites from days gone by. Each week of August will be dedicated to a different decade.
Food is one of the best ways to revisit past memories. The scent of citrus can take you back to your childhood, rummaging around in grandma’s kitchen helping her make her famous lemon meringue pie. Family recipes are always the best, which is why some of the delicious 50’s menu items are courtesy of Vicki’s mother. While lemon flavoured custards and pies have been enjoyed for centuries, the divine combination of lemon curd and fluffy meringue was perfected in the 19th century, and rose to popularity in the 1950’s.
Although we may no longer have milkmen delivering our milk daily at 4am, the 60’s brought us the British Invasion – a phase responsible for introducing bands like The Rolling Stones and The Kinks, and famed some of the delicious items on our 60’s week menu. Some of these most well-known dishes from the 60’s include the famous prawn cocktail. It was attributed to the British Invasion, from a particular British television chef who introduced us to the prawn cocktail as his favourite bite.
All of that goodness, and we haven’t even mentioned the 70’s and 80’s!
